Good Morning Mr President: Avoid political bickering for peace and development

Aug 5, 2024, 11:22 AM

Mr President, it is important to note that politics come and go but humanity always remains. Putting into account the important role you are playing as a statesman both nationally and internationally, you should learn to desist from hate speech and inflammatory words when addressing the public.

You are the President of all Gambians, Chairman of OIC and 2024 African Peace award winner - an award which was conferred on you in Mauritania in January 2024 by the African Conference for Peace. This simply means that your efforts in upholding and maintaining peace as head of state are highly recognised across the country and beyond.

Mr President, your statement on Saturday 27 July 2024 in Brikama was highly condemned as it brought mixed feelings and it serves as a lesson for not only you but all your supporters and every other Gambian.

You should be the champion of peace by concentrating on other relevant issues and to show to everyone that there is no time for politics and political campaign at the moment.

Mr President, as head of state, you must be exemplary in all good manners and you should measure your words when addressing the public.

Any hate speech or inflammatory words which could lead to disunity and political instability should be avoided.

At this point, we would like take this opportunity to appeal to both the  Supreme Islamic Council and Christian Council to broker peace between you and Lawyer Ousainou Darboe. The two of you should break the ice and turn a new page in the interest of the nation by maintaining peace and stability. Let politics not divide us as it comes and goes.

Mr President, we urge that you focus on national development. Remember you have been elected by Gambians to address their concerns such as high cost of living, basic health care, unemployment, security and infrastructure. Your government should try to find a solutions to some of these problems like high price of basic commodities, ensure reliable water and electricity supply, good road-networks, ensure availability of national documents, enhance security and safety and fight drugs, irregular migration, which is claiming lots of lives, job creation among others. War of words with your opponents will not take us anywhere.

Remember, in February this year, you called for a national dialogue with 19 political parties , Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and a cross section of the public. If this dialogue was meaningful, then we should turn a new page and forget about political bickering.

Finally Mr President, we should promote peace and unity for our new found democracy to prevail and work for national development.

Politicians should sell their political agenda to the electorates. The state media should be used by all political leaders but baseless accusations or inflammatory words should not be encouraged.

 Good day!
