Woman jailed for jewellery theft

One Mama Jatta was recently convicted and sentenced by the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court to six months in prison after she admitted to a charge of theft.

The court also ordered her to pay the complainant cost of the items which amounted to D70,000.

According to the facts as narrated before the court, the convict, Mama Jatta, was working for the complainant as a maid and was assigned by the complainant to sweep her bedroom. 

During her work in the room, she opened the complainant’s drawer and took the items, of gold chain and silver necklace worth D70,000.

It was further stated that she took the items to Serrekunda Market and sold one to the second accused, Eliman Njie, and one to Hadim Joof, who was at large, for D800.

The complainant went to check the drawer and could not find the items, but later confronted the accused and she admitted that she was the one who took them.

The matter was reported to a CID Officer and an investigation was carried out in which the second accused, Eliman Njie, was also arrested and taken to Tallinding Police Station, the narration of the facts ended.

However, the second accused, Eliman Njie, denied the charge.

The case was then adjourned till 16 February 2012.
