A
woman called Fatoumata Jallow was recently convicted and sentenced to a
mandatory jail-term of one year for attempting to procure abortion.
Fatoumata Jallow, who was also found guilty of conspiracy to commit a felony, was also fined D5,000 in default to serve one year in prison.
The case was presided over by Magistrate Gomez of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court.
The particulars of offence in count one read that between 4 and 5 December 2014, at Kotu Quarry in the Kanifing Municipality, she conspired with another person to commit a felony, that is, to abort a pregnancy.
Count two stated that with intent to abort her pregnancy, she unlawfully administered herself tablets knowing fully that this could cause a miscarriage.
