Murder is becoming a big problem in our beloved country, and all efforts should be employed both at the home, in every community and at the national level to sensitise our people about such a social vice in our society. We are still coming to terms with the high rate of murders committed in 2008 and 2009.
Despite the efforts taken by the courts to deal with the backlog of murder cases, and the stiff sentencing meted out to serve as deterrence, such crimes are still being committed in the country.
Perhaps one would tend to associate such crimes with drug abuse or family or social problems. Whatever the cause(s), it should not be a license for anyone to take someone's life.
In this regard, parents have a very crucial role to play in the upbringing of their children, especially at the infant stage.
This is the stage were the child can be moulded to become a disciplined and responsible person in society.
Meanwhile, the authorities should make sure that all those who commit murder are given a speedy trial, and the law should be applied to the letter.
There should be zero tolerance for murder in The Gambia.
