Hundreds of schoolchildren from 94 nursery schools across West Coast Region on Saturday converged at the Gunjur Lower Basic School to celebrate The Gambia's 46th Independence Anniversary in grand style.

The celebration took the form of a march-past by the schoolchildren and their teachers, under the watchful eyes of their parents, guardians, dignitaries and a cross-section of the community of Gunjur.

Speaking on behalf of the West Coast Region Governor Baboucarr Ceesay, a pupil of Mariama Mai Nursery School in Gunjur said the day marked “another milestone in the history of The Gambia”.

The nursery schoolboy went down memory lane saying The Gambia gained its independence from  Britain on 18 February 1965. "We celebrate our 46 years of nationhood since attaining independence from Britain and since then lots of developments have taken place in the country. I hope more developments will be forthcoming in years to come," Ceesay said.

He called on Gambians to come together as one and to contribute their quota to nation-building while urging schoolboys and girls to take their education seriously.
