The President of the Gambia Volleyball Association (GVBA), Musa Casa Taal on Tuesday 2nd March 2010 organised a one-day kid's volleyball friendly gala for Brikama Serrekunda East and Wellingara Volleyball teams at the Gambia College in Brikama.
During the friendly, Casa also presented sets of jersey and volleyballs to the teams that participated in the gala.
Speaking to Pa Baboucarr Barrow, the Head Coach of Brikama Volleyball team shortly after the friendly game described the move as very good. As he put it, it brought together young volleyball players.
He also urged the sporting bodies not to be football bias so as to be recognised internationally in all sporting events.
Head Coach Barrow also seeks assistance from the government, NGO's and the private sector to come to their aid. As he put it "we are seeking support from every body to come and help us, because as a team we did not even have a set of jersey."
Lamin Cham, Physical Education Teacher at Bottrop Senior Secondary School described the friendly as a move towards the development of volleyball in the country.
Cham also stressed the need for volleyball to be introduced in schools to widen the scope of volleyball in the country, by developing players not only in the concept of winning, but for the game to be part of their life.
He further stated that it is their responsibility as physical education teachers to be committed and to ensure that all sporting events are recognised so as to attract government’s support.
The Gambia Volleyball Association (GVBA) is also inviting junior players U-18 to come and register in order to set up a structure at grassroots volleyball.
As of now registration is open and interested teams can call on the association’s President on 9920303 or 7980303 for more details.
