URR youths, others trained on human rights and democracy

Over 120 young people, including students, teachers and local area councillors, recently took part in a day regional seminar in Basse, Upper River Region.

The regional seminar, held on the theme: “promoting human rights and democracy at the grassroots level”, was organised by Beakanyang in collaboration with the Regional Education Directorate in Region 6.

Funded by the US embassy through its Democracy and Human Rights Fund (HRF), the seminar among other things sensitised participants on human rights and democracy to enable them serve as advocates of peace and tolerance.

Topics such as introduction to human rights, grassroots democracy, child rights, good citizenship were professionally deliberated on by resource persons from the National Council for Civic Education, Youth Crime Watch The Gambia and Beakanyang.

Regional governor Alhagie Omar Khan, Basse Area Council chairman Omar Sompo Ceesay, Beakanyang board chairman Yahya Sumareh and Sare Ngai Ward councillor Alkally Kebbeh were among host of dignitaries at the opening ceremony.
