Standard FC snatch win in Gunjur’s biggest football fiesta

Standard FC on Saturday beat knock-out champions Alex Sanchaba FC 2-0 to snatch their first victory in the 2014-2015 Gunjur’s summer biggest football gala played at the Gunjur Nyamina football field.

The nail-biting clash, which saw a brilliant exhibition of skills and panache, attracted hundreds of spectators from Gunjur and environs for the weekend clash between the two household names in the Gunjur nawetan, and produced a few goal-scoring opportunities in the first half.

Upon resumption of the game, Standard FC contained Alex Sanchaba FC

in the midfield and created numerous goal-scoring opportunities.

Standard FC opened the scoreline through Brikama United’s prolific striker, Saikouba Manneh, in the 57th minute of the game from the penalty spot, after midfielder Musa Sonko aka Juninho Panabucano was brought down inside Alex Sanchaba FC’s eighteen yard box to give his side the lead.

Substitute Yankuba Jammeh alias Wayne Rooney notched in the second goal for Standard FC in the 65th minute of the game to dash Alex Sanchaba FC’s hopes of coming back to their feet.

Alex Sanchaba FC fought back quickly for an equalizer, but could not break through Standard FC’s formidable defence line; thus the game ended 2-0 in favour of Standard FC.

The victory has earned Standard FC top spot in group C with the maximum 3 points in one game, while the defeat left Alex Sanchaba FC languishing at the bottom of group C without a point in one game and it needs to beat Solifo Investment FC and FC Halifax Town in their remaining two fixtures.

The reining league and Super Cup champions, Steve Biko FC, came from one nil down to draw 1-all with cellular giants Gamcel FC in the group A clash played on Thursday.

Gamcel FC opened the tally through talisman Yusupha Barrow widely known as Beckham, but Dodou Sambou leveled the scores for Steve Biko FC moments later to share the spoils.

Midfielder Dodou Sambou could have snatched the vital three points for Steve Biko FC in the dying minutes of the game from the penalty spot, but his shot went wide and thus the game ended 1-all.

Elsewhere, Sibindinto FC also came from behind to draw 1-all with Kajabang FC in the group B tie played on Friday. Kajabang FC were the first to score, but Sibindinto FC leveled the scores moments later to ensure each side go home with a point.
