Soma
Newtown FC lifted UNFPA’s regional football tournament after beating Geneire FC
1-0 at the football final played at Soma mini stadium in Jarra West District,
Lower River Region on Friday.
Organized
by the UNFPA, in collaboration with its partners as part of their Campaign
dubbed “Family Planning; YES to CHOICE, NO to CHANCE”, the campaign
specifically targeted young women and men in the Lower and Upper River Regions.
When
the referee blew the whistle for the start of the game, Geneire FC players
wasted no time in showcasing their talent against their opponents Soma Newtown
FC.
As
the first match in progress, Geneire FC attracted the spectators because of
their dominance of the game but in the dying minutes of the 1st half of the
encounter, Soma Newtown FC’s No. 8 Yusupha Colley scored their only goal.
In
the 2nd half of the game, Geneire FC tried all their best to equalise the score
but to no avail. Soma Newtown FC protected themselves with strong defence
forces which were not easy to penetrate.
As
the 2nd half kicked-off, Soma Newtown FC narrowly escaped from Geneire FC
through their lone goal.
As
champions, Soma Newtown FC received D7, 500. Geneire FC, as runners-up, went
home with D5, 000 while the rest of the participating football teams like
Japinneh FC and Kani-kunda FC each received D3, 000 as consolation prizes.
It
will be recalled that two weeks ago Manju FC from Mansajang Kunda of URR were
crowned with the UNFPA’s regional championship after beating Kansala FC from
Kaba Kama at St. George’s Lower Basic School’s football field grounds.
