Standard Chartered Bank, one of the leading banks in the country has awarded Mr. George S. Madi, one of its outstanding board member, cum Managing Director of Shyben A Madi and Sons, as well as the Honorary Consul General of Japan in The Gambia.
The award was presented to Mr. Madi senior on Thursday 13th May 2010, at the Kairaba Beach Hotel during the bank's Annual General Meeting.
The award was given to him in recognition of his excellent contrition to the success of the bank, through his role as a non-executive director. He served the bank with total commitment and devotion for nearly nine years from 2001 to 2009.
Just a few days after receiving the prestigious award, this reporter approached Mr. Madi for an interview at his office inn Banjul.
In his reaction, Mr. Madi said: "Well, is simply in recognition of his work with the bank. The bank is a very good bank and we try to with my colleagues on the board in helping the bank to navigate in this difficult time of banking," he said.
According to him, the bank is a leader and a star in the country's banking industry. "The bank has footprints in the banking industry," he added.
For Mr. Madi, Standard Charted bank is healthy, profitable and a very successful bank, while encouraging the bank officials to keep up the good work.
Commenting on The Gambia/Japan relations, Consul General Madi maintained that the two countries enjoy a warm and excellent bilateral ties. This, he said, is manifested with the various sectors such as health, education, agriculture, fisheries and food supply.
"The relationship is old and continue to grow from strength to strength in a warm and friendly manner," said Mr.Madi.

It could be recalled that the government of Japan through its embassy in Dakar, Senegal in June last year also decorated Mr. Madi in appreciation of his hard work, as the Honorary Consul General of Japan in The Gambia for over 20 years.
Mr. Madi is a well-known personality in The Gambia, thus a successful business tycoon and a member of the Rotary Club since 1981.
