Re-opening The Standard

Mar 18, 2011, 12:24 PM

The greenlight for re-opening The Standard newspaper given by President Yahya Jammeh is a most welcomed development.

This is long overdue, considering the impact the paper made within its short period of operation.

The directive given by the President for the paper to re-start publication is a step in the right direction, and a good sign for opening a new page in Government-media relations.

The media is an important partner in development, and no society can prosper without a progressive media.

The media awakens people and raises their knowledge and understanding on issues affecting their lives.

We have to understand that the role of the media is to inform, entertain and educate the masses to issues that are pertinent towards their development.

The coming of The Standard into the country's media scene, within the short period of its initial operations, made a great impact in the country.

The paper was able to recruit aspiring journalists, and created employment opportunities for some trained journalists as well.

We strongly believe if the media houses are given more of the required support, they will be able to do a lot more for the country.

Once more, we welcome our colleagues in The Standard to the newspaper world, and wish them the best of luck.
