Upper Basic schools in the provinces will participate in their regional athletics heats ahead of this year’s national inter-school championship run by the Gambia Athletics Association, according to the Gambia Secondary School Sports Association (GSSSA).

The heats, which are part of the GSSSA 2011/12 calendar of activities, will see schools from CRR/URR meeting at Bansang Upper Basic. Those from Kerewan, Pakalinding and Brikama will assemble at Essau, Soma and Bwiam Upper Basic Schools respectively.

Upper Basic and secondary schools in the greater Banjul area will also have their own show at the Independence Stadium in Bakau in preparation for fellow contenders and qualifiers from the provinces for the interschool athletic championship slated for March 10 and 11, 2012.

The umbrella body in charge of athletics in the country, the Gambia Athletics Association, is expected to coordinate these events by making sure that they are conducted properly through officials on the grounds.

The annual National Inter-School Athletics championship is known for its promotion of young talented athletes who are scouted by national athletic coaches and prepared for international competitions.

As part of their calendar of activities, the fixtures of the inter-school football and volleyball competitions, expected to take place in May/June 2012 in Brikama, will be released.

According to the GSSSA, a taskforce committee headed by Alagie Cherno Barra Touray has been identified, which include The Gambia Police Force, members of the student body, the Ministry of Basic Education, the Ministry of Youth and Sports and other stakeholders to help in properly organising the events.
