New GPU executive meets Information Minister

Apr 23, 2015, 10:49 AM

The newly-elected executive of the Gambia Press Union (GPU) led by the president, Bai Emil Touray, yesterday paid a courtesy visit to the Minister for Information and Communication Infrastructure, Sheriff Bojang.

Bojang welcomed the GPU executive, and congratulated them on their election.

“The government is both ready and willing” to engage the media in talks with a view to smoothening relations, he said.

In his remarks, GPU president Bai Emil Touray thanked the minister for his swift response in accepting to meet the GPU executive.

He put across issues concerning improvement of the working environment for media practitioners.

“The meeting was held in a friendly atmosphere, touching on a wide range of issues,” Mr Touray said.

“Common grounds have been reached, and the differences were appreciated.”

It was recognised that “there has traditionally been misunderstanding between the government and the media”, resulting largely from lack of dialogue.

In this regard, both said they stand ready to engage in constructive talks.
