The Minister of Local Government and Lands, Hon. Pierre Tamba, last Wednesday inaugurated Banjul City Council’s Local Government Service Commission at the Banjul City Council hall.

The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Local Government Lands, Saikou Sanyang, said the inauguration of the new Local Government Service Commission is very important in the governance process.
He said the process is in line wih government's decentralization process, and expressed confidence in the members, describing them as very high caliber people.
PS Sanyang said the inauguration of the Commission is a legal requirement.
"The Commission supposes to be a supporting instrument to the Council through the establishment committee, which is mandated by the Council."
Speaking on behalf of the Mayor of Banjul, Samba Faal, the Deputy Mayor of
"The Council is mandated to establish a Local Government Service Commission which was enacted by the Parliament and consented to by the President of the Republic of The Gambia in the year 2002," he added.
The deputy Mayor said that the Local Government Commission should comprise a chairperson, and not less than four other members, all of whom must be persons of high integrity, caliber and good character.
