Following his plea of own guilt to the offence of cheating by selling a kilo of meat D70 (Seventy Dalasis) instead of D60 (sixty Dalasis) to the Police Commissioner, Mamudou Jobe, one Babucarr Cham was recently convicted and sentenced to a fine of D5, 000 (five thousand Dalasis) in default to serve one year in prison.
The sentence was administered by Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of the Brikama Magistrates' Court.
According to the facts narrated by the prosecuting officer, Sgt. 553 Jammeh, the accused owned a shop around Coastal road where he sells meat. He adduced that on 22nd May 2009, the Commissioner of Police, Mamudou Jobe went to the said accused's shop to buy meat, and the commissioner gave him D200 (Two hundred Dalasis) to pay for 2 kilos of meat and the accused gave him D60 (sixty Dalasis) change.
He adduced that, after the commissioner received his change, he was so surprised and he asked the cost price of the kilo of meat and the accused said D70 (seventy Dalasis). He said the accused was immediately arrested and taken to Yundum Police Station.
The accused in his mitigation urged the court to temper justice with mercy and forgive him for the wrong.
