The Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (GSIC) has announced that last Thursday 17th December 2009 was the 30th of Dhul Hijjah (the last month of Muslim Calendar) 1430.
According to a statement from the council, in view of that Friday 18th December 2009 is the first of Muharram (the first month of the Muslim Calendar) 1431.
The Supreme Islamic Council further reminded the general public of the Sunnah practiced by the prophet (SAW) in fasting the 9th and 10th of Muharram, which will fall on Saturday 26th and Sunday the 27th of December respectively.
"The council wishes His Excellency the president of the republic, President Jammeh, his government and the entire people of the Gambia a blessed and prosperous Muslim New Year", the statement concluded.
