The Agribusiness Service and Producer' Association (ASPA), which is the inter-professional body vested with the management of the Gambia Groundnut Sub-sector, in consultation with the government of The Gambia has announced a groundnut producer price of D8500 per metric ton farm gate, plus a commission of D900 per metric ton for the 2009/10 groundnut marketing season.
ASPA also declared today Monday 7th December 2009 as the official start date for this year’s groundnut marketing season in The Gambia until 30 March 2010 when the season would close.
Consequently, a statement from the GGC stated that all Cooperative Marketing Societies (CPMS), private traders and any agent wishing to participate in groundnut buying at primary (Secco) level are requested to prepare their equipment and clean their Secco accordingly.
"Groundnut producers are hereby assured that this year’s producer price was arrived at using the officially recognised producer price determination mechanism, which takes into account the world market price for groundnut products, as well as parameter and ratios relevant to the domestic marketing system.
"This year's price is quite favourable, compared to what pertains in the sub- region," the statement stated.
"Farmers are therefore urged to sell their produce through the existing marketing outlets.
Once again, ASPA solicits the cooperation of all and sundry to make the marketing season a success," the release concluded.
