Red Cross Society (GRCS) has activated its restoring family links tool and is
now providing support to families of the migrants who died in the December 4
boat accident in the Atlantic Ocean off the Mauritanian coast.
The
society says families and loved ones can now visit its headquarters in Kanifing
to file tracing requests in order to help locate their family members. It says
it is also in close contacts with its Red Cross Movement partner and other
humanitarian partners in The Gambia and Mauritania to provide psychosocial
support to the survivors of the tragic incident and their families.
“Meanwhile,
The Gambia Red Cross Society has joined the rest of the nation in mourning the
deaths of young Gambians off the coast of Mauritania,” it said.
According official figures, 60 deaths have
been confirmed and 41 missing. At least 84 survivors are confirmed and
assistance is being provided to them by Mauritanian authorities, the Red Cross
and International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
