The Kanifing Magistrates' Court presided over by Magistrate Secka recently convicted and sentenced one Muhammed Ceesay to the period he had already spent in detention, while undergoing trial.
The accused, Muhammed Ceesay, was said to have committed a felony to wit stealing from a garage, a charge he denied.
The trial Magistrate in his judgment went through the evidence of the prosecution witnesses, and that of the accused person, and concluded that the prosecution had proven its case beyond all reasonable doubt. He consequently found the accused person guilty as charged.
Before passing sentence, the trial magistrate asked the police prosecutor whether the accused person is a first-time offender.
Police prosecutor Maria told the court that the accused is a first-time offender, and that the trial commenced in March 2010.
The trial Magistrate consequently sentenced the accused to serve the six months period he had already spent in detention while undergoing trial.
