The Gambia U-17 women’s team arrived yesterday at the terminal in Banjul from their return leg with their counterparts in Tunisia where they emerged victorious and qualified for the upcoming U-17 FIFA World Cup in Azerbaijan in 2012.
Speaking to the press shortly after their arrival amid a large welcoming crowd, the assistant coach, Chorro Mbenga, said she was proud of the team making it in Tunisia and that it was a good step for the Gambian women making this great history.
She added that they deserved the victory after seeing the performance of the girls, which has given them the courage they need to be sure of making it.
In his welcoming remarks, Alh. O.B. Conateh expressed gratitude to the team and assured them that the ministry of sport will do all they could to support them, and further thanked the coaches for their hard work, urging them to continue the good work.
The Gambian women side registered a lone goal victory over their Tunisian counterparts in the first leg qualifier of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifier a fortnight ago in Banjul and wrapped up their campaign with a 2-1 advantage in Tunisia to make a historic record in the history of women’s football in the country.
