According to official sources, the government has decided to disband the municipal police forces established by the Banjul City Council (BCC), Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) and Brikama Area Council (BAC).
This is with effect from 9 June 2016, according to the mayor of Banjul, Abdoulie Bah, speaking in an interview with The Point.
BCC mayor Bah said the police officially went to the council on Monday to take over the security duties of the municipal police.
He said a letter was received from central government by the employers of the municipal authorities to disband their police forces, which stated:
“Banning of Municipal Police”
“I write on Executive directive that all municipal police should disband with immediate effect.”
Mayor Bah said those affected in his municipality are still in the council’s payroll, adding that the administration would see how to work with dedicated persons that were affected.
