Nov 9, 2015, 11:19 AM

The Gambia were on Saturday 7 November 2015 disqualified from the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) after refusing to play an extra time, following a 90-minute goalless draw with Senegal, in the finals of WAFU Zone `A’ tournament held in Dakar.

Gambia Football Federation officials said it was agreed at a technical meeting that after 90 minutes of draw the two teams should go for penalties.

An official of the GFF told The Point that Jammeh E.K. Bojang, Secretary General of WAFU Zone A, said he misinterpreted the rules, which made provision for extra time to be played after a 90–minute draw.

The tournament was expected to be played by 9 teams, but only 4 participated, with 5 absentees.

The tournament is named after the late Mawade Wade, former executive member of CAF, who has contributed immensely towards the development of African football.

He was a Senegalese residing in Saint Louis, which is situated 270km from Dakar.
