The Brikama Magistrates' Court on Wednesday 22nd September 2010 remanded in custody one Salifu Badjie, an ex-military officer, after he pleaded guilty to the charge of arson.
According to the charge sheet, on 18th September 2010 at Sohm village in the Kombo East district of the Western Region, the accused person, Salifu Badjie, set fire to the bed sheet and mattress of one Yaya Badjie, his biological brother.
The presiding magistrate Nkea however stated there was a need to amend the charge sheet to include the house.
Inspector Fadera, the prosecuting officer, told the court that the case was for mention and that they will send the case file to the Attorney General' Chambers for legal advice.
Also, during the proceedings, Magistrate Nkea asked the family why they want to send the accused person to jail.
In response, one of his uncles told the magistrate that the accused person is a troublemaker, and that this was not the first time for him to commit such an offence. The uncle added that even when his own father died, the accused person attempted to burn their compound.
He also told the court that the accused person was dismissed from the military because of his bad behavior and character.
When asked by the trial magistrate whether his family members can bail him, one of the family members responded in the negative, saying that the accused person is capable of doing anything.
Magistrate Nkea subsequently remanded the accused, and adjourned the matter to 6th October for hearing.
