Duo arraigned for stealing charcoal

Gibriel Nyang and Musa Manneh were on Thursday 5th August 2010, arraigned before Magistrate Secka of the Kanifing Magistrates' Court, charged with stealing. Both denied the charges.

Testifying for the prosecution, the second prosecution witness, Amat M. Touray told the court that he is a police officer attached to Kanifing Estate Police Station, and that he recognised the accused persons.

According to him, on the 11th May 2010, they were on patrol at the Kanifing Industrial Estate when they met the accused persons with three bags of charcoal.

He said the accused persons were interrogated and they confessed of stealing the said bags of charcoal from a woman.

Subsequently, he added the accused person were arrested and taken to the Kanifing Estate Police Station, where they were cautioned and charged with the offence committed. He adduced that he made a statement to that effect.

Also testifying Maja Saidykhan told the court that he is a police officer attached to Kanifing Estate Police Station, and that he recognised the accused persons.

He adduced that they were on patrol when they met with the accused persons carrying a bag of charcoal each.

Officer Saidykhan further adduced that they interrogated them and they confessed of stealing the said property. He informed the court that the third accused person has since absconded.

Subsequently, he added, they apprehended and escorted them to the Kanifing Estate Police Station. He added that pictures were taken on their arrival at the station.

The prosecutor then tendered the said pictures as exhibits before the court.

He said he made a statement to that effect.

The case was adjourned to 16th August 2010.
