The Governor of the Central Bank of The Gambia, Momodou Bamba Saho has said that the Inter Bank Football Tournament, which was revived in 2004 by Governor Famara Jatta, actually started in 1995.
Governor Saho said this initiative was meant to bring all the banks together in the spirit of camaraderie.
He said football is one of the world's most popular and simplest sports, and this is why the competition was based on it.
"If possible in the near future other sports will be included in the competition as sports is very important in the development and health of every human being," the Central Bank stated during the officially opening of the 2010 Governor's trophy over the weekend.
Each team paid a registration fee D15, 000 in the twelve team competition. The winner is expected to go home with a trophy and a cash prize of D20, 000, while the runner-up will receive a consolation prize of D15, 000.
Prizes for the most disciplined team, leading goal scorer and most disciplined player are also at stake.
