The Catholic Mission Branch has emerged winners of the volleyball tournament organised by the Lower River Regional Red Cross Branch over the weekend at the Jarra Soma Mini Stadium.

The tournament, which featured four volleyball teams, was staged as part of activities to celebrate the 2015 International Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.

In two sets, the catholic team shocked the Mansakonko Army to 25-22 and 25-15 respectively before locking horns with the Soma Major Health Centre, who similarly defeated the Pakalinding village boys to 25-19 and 25-22 respectively.

Father Joseph’s side braced up 25 to 18 points against the health workers in the first set but coach Liman Hydara’s side managed to create a 24-all draw in the second set urging the referee to ask for first to three points as winner.

The extra time earned the catholic boys victory with a token of appreciation of D300 while the Health Centre received D200 as runners up.

The Red Cross Branch officer for the Lower River Region, Momodou Sanneh described the tournament as successful and historic.

He noted that the tournament was chosen to attract the largest audience who fall within the branch’s target of awareness on the seven basic principles of the Red Cross society.

He thanked the teams and their fans for their participation and further encouraged them to keep sporting.
