The 2015 Gambia Basketball league got under way on Saturday April 04th, with Brikama Basketball Club defeating defending champions YMCA Basketball Club 56-47 points in a thrilling encounter played at the basketball court of the Independence Stadium in Bakau.
In a well-attended game, Brikama Basketball Club controlled in the game at the onset leading 15-5 in the first quarter.
YMCA Basketball team pushed in the second quarter, but Brikama maintained their composure and went to break with a 39-15 lead.
The third quarter was marked by lack of concentration for both teams, but Brikama extended their lead to 44-27 points.
It was a big suspense for the travelling Brikama fans in the last quarter as YMCA Basketball Club got their speed back in the game narrowing the lead, but Brikama’s playmaker Modou Sanneh and teammates were on top of their game, and finally won the encounter with 56-47 points.
In the early kick off of the day, YMCA female team had a walk-over on Kotu female team 55-7 points in a one-sided game.
YMCA female team had an easy encounter against Kotu girls, taking the game in their favour in the first quarter with 14-0 points.
It was 29-2 points in favour of the YMCA girls going to the break, and 37-3 at the end of the third quarter.
The YMCA girls sealed the game on 55-7 points at the final whistle.
Meanwhile, the league continues on Thursday 9th April 2015 with Old School taking on Serekunda East at the stadium’s basketball court at 5.30pm.
On Friday April 10th Gambia Armed Forces will play Late Babou Sowe in the female category at 5.00pm in Banjul, and at 7.00pm Banjul will host Late Babou Sowe Basketball Club in the male category.
On Saturday April 11, two male games are on the programme at the Independence Stadium with Manjai playing Gambia Armed Forces at 5.00pm; Serekunda West will lock horns with YMCA at 7.00pm.
