Mr Njie has replaced Alhaji Mustapha L. Carayol, who was appointed in 2006.
At the time of going to press, no official reason has been advanced for the change.
When contacted, Mr Njie confirmed his appointment.
The new IEC Chairman takes office today.
He will preside over the presidential election on 1 December 2016 and the parliamentary election in 2017.
