61 schools to take part in GALP tournament

The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education's MoBSE National Coordinator for schools in The Gambia, Musa Mendy has disclosed to Regional Sports Coordinators that GALP will continue its sponsorship of Lower Basic School Football Tournament.

The tournament in the past 15 years was sponsored by the former Shell Marketing Company Gambia Ltd. across the country.

Mendy, who was speaking at a meeting with six coordinators from Regions One and Two, on Wednesday, gave a brief history of the schools that won the Shell Marketing Football Tournament from 1992-2008, such as Sinchu Baliya in Region Two, Brikama Lower Basic in Region Two, Brikama Islamic Institute in Region Two, Tallinding Islamic in Region One and Serrekunda Lower Basic Schools in Region One, the defending champions for 2008.

Region One and Two will participate in the football tournament and both regions will be divided into two, that is Kombo Central and Kombo North for Region Two, while Region One will also be divided into Banjul and KMC.

The numbers of schools to take part in the tournament are for six teams from Kombo Central, eight from Kombo North nine from Banjul and 40 schools KMC will take part in the tournament.

All the Regional Coordinators unanimously agreed that the selection for the players must be based on measurement, not by age adding that the measurement should be a height of 1.5m.

Mendy thanked the Managing Director of GALP, Mr. Freeman for his willingness to continue the tournament from the former Shell Marketing Company Ltd.

Prizes are pegged at for champions D2, 500 and giant trophy, runners-up D1, 500, 3rd position D1, 000 and 4th position D750.
