West Coast Region Football Referees Association (WCRFRA) on Thursday 24th October 2025 caution Journalist Ebrima KB Sonko over his abusive remarks against referees of West Coast Region.

Sonko is currently serving as Public Relations Officer (PRO ), Brikama Sports Committee (BSC).

The Executive of West Coast Region Referee Association was following due protocol to secure a level playing atmosphere in the interest of BSC for stakeholders, the community of Brikama and West Coast Referees.

WCRRA stated that the provision of security for football matches is a prerequisite for all organising committees.

"This will undoubtedly promote great atmosphere and fairness, as referees will approach matches not having an iota or shred of fear for any reprisals.”

Providing Security for football matches is a fundamental obligation for any football loving organising committee, who are ready to steer the affairs of football within its community and beyond, "WCRRA said.

WCRFRA and referee family were shocked with such approach that meets serious consequences by BSC to the extent of using abusive and offensive languages against their noble and hard working young people and their association.

The referee fraternity of WCRFRA and The Gambia Football Referees Association are greatly wounded, shocked and disgusted by the “disgraceful remarks” and “ridiculous allegation” made by journalist Ebrima KB Sonko of BSC.

"We are seriously challenged by this whole tsunami. We would swim through and come ashore by the grace of God," WCRRA pointed out.

“West Coast Referees' Association seized this opportunity to work with BSC effectively until certain underlying conditions are met”:

  1. Ebrima KB Sonko must go back to his platform where he made those despicable remarks to referees and say the same abusive language to himself.
  2. Sonko must use his platform and other media outlets to make a public apology to hardworking referees.
  3. WCRRF urged BSC make a public statement disassociating themselves with Sonko.

However, Sonko apologised to WCRFRA and The Gambia Football Referees Association over his ridiculous remarks on referees

According to WCRRA, these are the conditions to the executive committee in order to forge ahead in harmony, mutual respect and have a more ethical and professional approach.

Until these conditions are met, WCRFRA will remain committed to its position.

Meanwhile, Sports Journalists’ Association of The Gambia (SJAG) strongly condemned recent remarks made by their executive member Ebrima KB Sonko, directed at the Referees Association of the West Coast Region.

"The leadership of SJAG deems these comments unfortunate and entirely unacceptable, as they do not reflect the values and principles of our professional body.”

“We extend our sincere apology to The Gambia Football Referees Association for the impact of these remarks," SJAG said.

Meanwhile Ebrima KB Sonko oppologised for his action and remarks: "I humbly seek forgiveness from West Coast Referees Association and to everyone for my hurtful comments, I sincerely repent for my actions and pray that WCRRA forgive me.

May Allah SWT forgive our transgression and grant us all wisdom to think straight at all times,” Sonko posited.
