Real de Banjul FC were on Saturday crowned champions of the 2022/23 Gambia Football Federation (GFF) First Division League tournament after playing a goalless draw against Waa Banjul FC during the final game of the season played at the King George 5 Mini Stadium in Banjul.

The Whites, Real de Banjul, were behind early pacesetters, Falcons, who topped the league during the second round until the last two games.

Real de Banjul won this year’s league on goal-difference after leveling on points (52) with Falcons FC. Real last won the Gambian Premier League in 2014.

However, Falcons FC, who were unarguably one of the best teams in the league this season, squandered their chances of winning the title after conceding three consecutive defeats against Greater Tomorrow, Banjul and Marimoo Pakfood.

Both the top two teams, Real de Banjul and Falcons shared the same statistics apart from the goal-difference which Real is superior.

They both collected 14 wins, 10 draws and suffered six defeats in 30 matches. Real de Banjul scored more goals (38) than Falcons (33) in the league season.

As winners, Real de Banjul was awarded goal medals, a giant trophy and a cheque of one million dalasis.

The top five teams of the league

Real de Banjul and Falcons FC finished 1st and 2nd positions with 52 points respectively. Fortune FC occupy 3rd place with 48 points, two points above Brikama United, who sit 4th position with 46 points while Samger FC ended the league on 5th place with 44 points, leveled with Marimoo Pakfood.

Bottom place teams

PSV Wellingara and Hawks FC are confirmed relegated sides with 21 and 31 points respectively after 30 matches. Gamtel FC, who sit first from bottom (14th) position with 34 points, will play a playoff match to decide whether or not to stay in the topflight league next season.
