Manjai zonal team on Friday defeated Serrekunda West zonal team 2-0 during their third KM pre-season tournament game played at the Father Gough Sports Complex in Manjai.
Buba Dahaba opened the scoring for the Manjai Kunda side in the 20th minute after converting from the penalty spot. Yaya Touray doubled Manjai’s lead in the 32th minute after a wonderful strike outside the box.
“This is our third game without conceding. The instruction given to the team was to come and score goals and not concede,” he said, noting that it was good playing three games without conceding.
Despite drawing two and winning one in three games, the Manjai gaffer noted that they are never satisfied with the performance of their players, adding that they will continue working hard as they eye to win the zonal proper championship.
“We are still building our team and are giving chances to other players. Some are doing well while others need adjustment. We are in the process of selecting our 30-man squad for the championship,” he said further.
Muhammed Mendy, head coach of Serrekunda West said their performance was not bad despite losing to Manjai.
“We lost the game due to lack of concentration during the first half. We tried to rectify them in the second period but could not capitalise on our chances,” he said.
He added that they are in their screening process for the zonal proper, saying they are using the pre-season tournament to train players and work on their weaknesses before the zonal proper championship.
Coach Mendy, who lost two consecutive matches after defeating neighbours, Serrekunda East during their opening game of the pre-season, said results do not matter but how to build a team, work on their weaknesses and rectify their mistakes.
The Manjai Zonal team collected 5 points after drawing two games against Serrekunda Central and Serrekunda East before defeating Serrekunda West.
Serrekunda West collected 3 points after defeating Serrekunda East in the opening game before losing to Bakau and now Manjai respectively.
Meanwhile, the zonal championship proper starts on Thursday 1st December 2022.
