Journalism Students' Association (JSA) football team have reacted to the recent verdict by the Sports Committee of the University of The Gambia (UTG).

JSA points were forfeited after found guilty of fielding unqualified player during their Vice Chancellor football tournament against Economic and Management Students' Association (ECOMANSA).

The UTG sports committee disqualified JSA from participating in the Vice Chancellor knock out.

JSA were also fined D2, 000 for fielding unqualified player against ECOMANSA.

Reacting to the verdict, JSA expressed disappointment with the verdict of the sports committee of UTG, alleging lack of transparency and fairness in the investigation conducted by the University of The Gambia (UTG) Sports Committee.

According to JSA, they received an email from the Students' Union notifying them of ECOMANSA’s appeal against them and subsequent investigation by the committee.

JSA stated that they were asked to provide the details for Babucarr Gaye the player in question, his admission letter, transcript and screenshot of his student portal.

JSA further stated that they were also asked to submit all requested documents through the secretariat.

JSA revealed that they also received another email from UTG sports committee imposing ban on Babucarr Gaye from participating in the 2024 Vice Chancellor football tournament.

JAS further revealed that they were fined D2000 and their points were also forfeited.

They stated that the ruling of UTG sports committee was communicated without prior notice of the investigation or any explanation of the reason behind their decision.

JSA considers this as a clear failure in due process.

‘‘We were not informed about the outcome of the investigation nor provided any transparency regarding how the decision was reached’’ JSA said.

JSA formally requested access to the committee’s findings and clarification of the specific provisions within the tournament's rules and regulations to justify the penalties imposed on them.

“More than 24 hours after passing the verdict we urged the sports committee to justify their decision but the committee is  yet to respond,’’ JSA said.

JSA pointed out that their silence only deepens on the concerns about the impartiality and transparency of the investigation.

JSA revealed that the verdict lacks legitimate basis in the rules and regulations governing the Vice Chancellor football tournament.

‘‘Until the committee provides a clear explanation and justifies its decision.

We are not comply with the sanction imposed on us,’’ JSA said.
