Jamisa SSS, New Covenant UBS win inter-schools athletics championship

Jamisa Senior Secondary School and Covenant Upper Basic School were over the weekend crowned champions of the 2023 Gambia Secondary Schools Sports Association (GSSSA) national inter-schools athletics championship.

The annual championship was held at the Kinderdorf Bottrop Technical Upper and Secondary School in Brikama.

Jamisa Secondary School won the Senior Secondary School category after bagging 201 points. They went home with a giant trophy, gold medals and a cash prize of D100,000.

Reigning champions Latrikunda Sabiji finished second-place with 194 points. They received silver medals and a cash prize of D50,000.

Scan Aid finished third-position with 181 points. They received bronze medals and a cash prize of D25,000.

Farafenni came out fourth with 174 points.

Charles Jaw secured fifth-place with 146, while Mahad Secondary School finished sixth-position with 129 points.

St Michael finished seventh-position with 92 points, while Saint Georges and Bottrop levelled on points with each receiving 76 points.

In the Upper Basic Schools category, New Covenant won the crown of champions after securing 209 points.

They received gold medals and a cash prize of D50,000 as champions, while Essau and Jambanjelly both finished as runners-ups with 185 points each.

Saint Charles Lwanga finished fourth with 174 points; WYCE and Kaur finished fifth-position with 155 points each, while Farafenni finished seventh-position with 98 points.

Meanwhile, the Secondary Schools Sports Association (GSSSA) clarified the early results released.

The statement reads: “The executive of the Gambia Secondary Schools Sports (GSSSA) wishes to inform the public that the results announced on Sunday 19th March 2023 after the completion of the championship was not correct.

“The severe errors were made in the 100 meters U-18 boys and girls where the results were not captured during the tabulation of the result.”

The GSSSA and Chairman were alerted by the affected school.

After going through the results and adding the points, it was proven and indicative that Jamisa Senior Secondary School were the champions.

The chairperson of the competition in consultation with the executive of GSSSA apologised to Jamisa Senior Secondary School, who were officially announced the champions of the 2023 national Inter-schools athletics championship.
