Iceland FC lift Njongon football trophy

Iceland FC of Barra were on Saturday crowned champions of the Njongon Sports Committee organised ‘nawetan’ competition after beating Kanuma FC 5-4 on post match penalty shootouts following a goalless draw in regulation time.

The final, played at Njongon Football Field in Lower Nuimi District, North Bank Region, was graced by Bakary Y. Badjie, the minister of Youth and Sports; Marcel Mendy, the executive director of the National Sports Council; Sainey Jawo, Gambian volleyball star who is a native of Njongon village and Njongon Regional Army Camp commander among other high profile dignitaries, spectators and fans.  

As winners, Iceland FC were awarded with a trophy and a cash prize of D20, 000, while runners-up Kanuma FC received a consolation prize of D15, 000.

Ousainou Joof of Mbollet Ba Soccer Academy went home with the leading goal scorer award of the tournament. He received a trophy and cash prize of D500.

Modou Lamin Jarju of Njongon FC was named the youngest goalkeeper of the competition. He was rewarded with a trophy.

Wellingara FC were declared the most disciplined team of the tournament. They were also awarded a trophy.  

The final was successfully played under the chairmanship of Sulayman Ndong.
