Kartong slipped to Sanyang 3-1 in their opening group match played at the Sanyang Football Field last Sunday.
Kartong required the maximum points against Gunjur to increase their dreams of qualifying for the semi-finals of the on-going Kombo Coastal village football championship.
Gunjur made a flying start to the match and came very close to opening the scores twice through wing wizard Baboucarr Jassey alias Joe Cole in the 2nd and 10th minute of the match but failed to score.
Pacey winger Omar Jabang alias Ozil gave Gunjur the lead in the 24th minute of the match from an astonishing strike.
Kartong responded back for an equaliser and launched several scoring attempts but failed to materialise on them thus the first half ended 1-nil in favour of Gunjur.
Upon resumption of the match, Kartong regrouped themselves and created many goal scoring opportunities but failed to capitalise on them.
Creative midfielder Mustapha Jobe alias Pedro scored the second goal for Gunjur in the 60th minute before substitute Mafugi Demba alias Fujo netted the third goal for the South in the 65th minute to clasp the vital three points.
Gunjur now joined Batokunku and Sanyang in the semi-finals of the 2023 Gach Global Mining Company sponsored Kombo Coastal village football tournament.
Meanwhile, Gunjur will play away to Sanyang in their second and final Group B match on Sunday 9th April 2023 at the Sanyang Football Field at 4.30pm.
