Gambian teams, GFF pay tributes to late coach

Gambian 1st, 2nd and 3rd division teams together with The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) have paid tribute to late Coach Sulayman Kuyateh, who died on Thursday 25 February 2021 after a brief illness.

He was laid to rest the following day Friday, 26 February 2021 at the Brikama Cemetery.

Kuyateh, 39, until his shocking demise, was the Head Coach of second division side Samger Football Club where he was halfway into a three-year contract signed with the team.

A multiple Gambian champion, Saul, as he was fondly called, won the domestic league title with his beloved Brikama United and Gamtel FC and led both sides to the CAF Champions League.

He also held a CAF B Licence Coaching Certificate.

Late Saul Kuyateh survived by a wife and a six-month’s old baby, before his passing at the Brikama Major Health Centre in the administrative capital of West Coast Region.

“Kuyateh was an amazing human being and an embodiment of a perfect gentleman. He was a family-oriented and an amazing human being both as a coach and a mentor to our players,” said his team Samger FC on their official Facebook page.

The club further said: “It is a sad day for football and a sad day for Gambia obviously because he is one of the very inspiring young coaches and he’s always had a talent that you could see.”

Samger FC’s chairman, Cherno Samba noted that late Saul Kuyateh always talked about football, how it should be played, saying that the former coach lost his life so young.

Real de Banjul also joined other teams to pay tribute to late Coach Kuyateh, saying that they are saddened to learn about his shocking demise.

“We are saddened to learn about the shocking demise of former Brikama United, Gamtel FC and Samger FC coach, Sulayman Kuyateh. We will like to send our deepest condolences to the family of Saul and Samger Football Club.”

Brikama United, Saul’s former club, also with heavy hearts, sadness and agony, they also joined teams in sending their condolence for a hero who had gone from their sights but still in their hearts.

“Sulayman Kuyateh, a mentor and dear one to many was one of the best things that had happened to Brikama; a professional and hard-working man who had passion and love for sports and humanity in general. You will forever live on!”

The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) also said it was devastating to learn the demise of former Brikama United, Gamtel and current coach of Samger Coach Sulayman kuyateh.

 “Everyone at GAF Football Club pray that Saul’s soul rest in perfect peace and be granted Jannatul Firdaws. Our condolences to the entire Kuyateh family, Samger football club, the football family, coaches’ association and the football federation, rest well till we meet again Saul.”

President of The Gambia Football Federation, Lamin Kaba Bajo said that Sulayman Kuyateh was just a wonderful person full of life, adding that he was modest, respectful and very committed to his profession.

“This is indeed a very sad moment for all of us. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time,” he added.
