FIFA set to introduce new offside rule ahead of 2023/24 season

FIFA are all set to introduce a new offside rule in football before the start of the 2023/24 season which will be tried first in Netherlands, Italy and Sweden.

The rule was proposed by former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who has been working as FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development for the last four years.

As of now, a player is called offside when any part of his body, from where he can score a legitimate goal, is ahead of the opponent’s last defender’s body part in the opponent’s half.

Now, according to the newly proposed rule by FIFA, a player will only be called offside when his entire body will be ahead of the last defender — if any part of the body is behind the last defender, the attacker will remain onside.

While this rule would be nothing less than a joy for attackers, it will make things difficult for defenders who, in the era of attacking football, are already facing difficulties in coping with the fast-paced football.

In the FIFA World Cup 2022, especially in the penalty shoot-outs, Argentina’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was seen disturbing the penalty takers by doing different things, throwing the ball, and scrubbing the penalty spot with toes.

FIFA are introducing a new “Anti Dibu Martinez” rule which will be applied to all the goalkeepers and will prevent the GKs to provoke the penalty taker by any mean. The GK will not be allowed to touch the goal posts, crossbar or do anything that would result in a delay in the execution of the penalty.

Another rule that FIFA are changing, every second a player celebrates a goal, those seconds will be added to the added time of the half.

As reported by the Spanish newspaper Marca, FIFA will propose one more rule which states that when someone on the bench does something “Illegal” and he cannot be identified by the referee, then the coach will automatically be sanctioned.

If a player from the bench says or does something that isn’t legal, then the manager will be penalised.
