The Coastal Town boys defeated Kombo East 1-0 in their final Group A match played at the Gunjur Nyamina Mini Stadium on Saturday.
Gunjur sat second-place in Group A of the West Coast Region zonal football tournament with 6 points before locking horns with Kombo East, who sat third-place in Group A with 3 points.
The Coastal Town boys made a flying start to the match and dominated Kombo East in the midfield, creating numerous goal scoring opportunities.
Baboucarr Touray alias Faback could have opened the scores for Gunjur in the 6th minute of the match from the penalty spot after right-back Dembo Camara alias Hazard was brought down inside the eighteen yard-box but shot was denied by the cross bar.
Kombo East, who were unable to contain Gunjur in the midfield, also crafted some goal scoring opportunities but failed to materialise on them thus the first half ended goalless.
Upon resumption of the match, Gunjur and Kombo East both introduced several fresh legs to reinforce their attacking tags and created goal scoring chances.
Youngster Dawda Sowe opened the scores for Gunjur in the 88th minute of the match from a thunderous strike, which eventually proved to be the winner for the Coastal Town boys.
Kombo East fought hard for an equaliser but were unable to penetrate Gunjur’s formidable defence line thus the match ended 1-0 in favour of Gunjur.
The victory earns Gunjur top-spot in Group A of the West Coast Region zonal football tournament with 9 points.
The defeat saw Kombo East out of the West Coast Region zonal football tournament with only 3 points after four group matches.
Kombo East will now hang their boots until next year after their exit from the West Coast Region zonal football tournament.
Sukuta finished second-place in Group A of the West Coast Region zonal football tournament with 7 points despite losing to Kombo Central Two 2-1 at the Marakissa Football Field.
