Banjul begins 2023 nawetan tournament

The Banjul Sports Committee (BSC) has begun its 2023 'nawetan' league season sponsored by both Trust Bank and Semplex.

The City nawetan tournament which started over the weekend has already seen some teams continuing from where they left off last season, while some are yet to have a redeem after their first match.

Last year’s Knockout Cup finalist Macdonald United commenced the Banjul nawetan with a smile after defeating newly promoted side from the qualifiers, Lewal B FC 2-0 in the opening game of the nawetan played earlier on Friday.

Eliman Jobe opened the scoring for Macdonald United in the 46th minute before Babou Sarr made the scoreline 2-nil in the 48th minute.

Jamesen were leading Ngoyan 1-0 in the second game played on Friday before it was called off due to the heavy downpour with nine minutes remaining on normal time.

Sayerr Sowe scored the game’s only goal in the 53nd minute after a beautiful assist from Assan Gaye.

According to the committee, the game will be continued from where it stopped on a date to be communicated by its nawetan competition department.

Meanwhile, there were four interesting fixtures played on Saturday, starting from morning to evening. All games were played at the Banjul KG5 Mini Stadium.

Black Diamond FC were beaten by London City 1-0 in the early game played in the morning. Ebrima Colley scored the only goal in the match for London City.

Janta Bi and Fire House played a barren goalless draw in the second morning game on Saturday.

Warriors defeated One Love 2-0 in the third game played in the early afternoon on Saturday.

Mansud Gibasi and Demba Taal’s goals were enough to seal the victory for the 2019 Banjul knockout champions.

Revelation beat Oneness 1-0 in the Jollof Town derby game played late on Saturday.

Yusupha Sowe scored the only goal in the match for the Knockout and Super Cup champions, Revelation.

Meanwhile, Tesito FC thumped Atletico 3-2 in the early game played on Sunday morning.

Dawda Bittaye of Tesito FC became the hero of the match after scoring a brace (two goals) during the game.

Golden State was forced to a barren goalless draw by Juventus during the second morning game played on Sunday.

Dembi beat Lancaster 1-0 in the early game played on Sunday afternoon. Momodou Bah scored the only goal of the game for Dembi FC.

Makann Bi and Ajax played a goalless draw during the final game played on Sunday.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Rapid Vienna will battle it out with Happy Corner. Red Tigers will take on Late Ebou Sowe.
