2027 AFCON qualifiers: Gambia produce memorable result against Ghana

Gambia produce memoriable results

The Gambia senior national team have produced one of the most memorable results in football history on match day 2 of their 2027 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations qualifier match against Ghana.

The Scorpions thumped Ghana 4-2 to record their first-ever victory over the four-time African champions.

The historic triumph came after another impressive performance from the Scorpions, who showed resilience, attacking quality and confidence to overcome one of Africa's traditional football giants.

Badamosi scores from the penalty spot.

The victory follows The Gambia's opening-day win over Somalia in Group C, giving the Scorpions a perfect start to their qualifier campaign with 6 points in two qualifier matches.

The result strengthens the Scorpions position in Group C and boost their hopes of securing a place at the 2027 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations.

Against a Ghanaian side renowned for its rich football heritage led by legendary Carlos Quiroz.

The Gambia rose to the occasion, delivering an energetic and disciplined display that delighted supporters and underlined the team's growing reputation on the continent.

The 4-2 scoreline reflected the Scorpions' attacking intent as they capitalised on their opportunities, while remaining composed under pressure from the Black Stars who took the lead through a soft penalty in the 17th minute before doubling it only for the Gambia to fight back through Muhammed Badamosi from the penalty spot followed by captain Omar Colley's cool header from a corner, sealing the 1st 45 on a 2 all scoreline.

The victory is expected to rank among the most significant achievements in Gambian football history.

Speaking after the match, fans and football observers hailed the result as further evidence of the remarkable progress made by Gambian football in recent years.

Since their historic debut at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, the Scorpions have continued to establish themselves as a competitive force in African football.

The latest victory against Ghana highlighted the emergence of a talented generation of Gambian players who have helped elevate the country's status on the international stage.

With growing experience and confidence, the Scorpions are increasingly proving they can compete with some of the continent's most established football nations.

As the 2027 qualification campaign gathers momentum, The Gambia's impressive start has attracted attention across Africa. Back-to-back victories over Somalia and Ghana have sent a strong message that the Scorpions are serious contenders and remain one of the teams to watch in the race for qualification.
