With a strong educational foundation in social work, information technology, and procurement and supply management, Isatou brings a diverse and comprehensive skill set to her work with women, children, and young people.
As the founder and Executive Director of Women and Children Aid The Gambia (WOCAG), she has devoted her life to empowering marginalized communities and tackling pressing issues such as gender-based violence, harmful traditional practices, and youth political participation, and advocating for equality and empowerment.
Her leadership extends to numerous key roles, where she continues to influence change and inspire others to join her in creating a more just and equitable society.
Her commitment to gender equality and social justice is further demonstrated through her roles as the Chairperson for the Kanifing Municipal Youth Committee, the first-ever elected and only female board member of the Gambia National Youth Council, and the President of the West African Network of Young Female Leaders (ROAJELF) Gambia Chapter.
Isatou's expertise as a Certified Trainer on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, Social and Behavioral Change Communication, and Gender and Development, among others, has enabled her to address critical issues such as GBV, sexual and reproductive health, and harmful traditional practices. Her dedication extends beyond The Gambia, as she also serves as the Admin and Finance Assistant at the African Youth Commission and the Public Relations and Media Officer for ECOWAS Citizens in The Gambia.
A tireless advocate for peace, security, and gender equality, Isatou is a member of the Technical Working Group on Peace and Security and the Gender Platform in The Gambia. Through her various leadership roles, she continues to inspire and mentor the next generation of leaders, fostering a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
Isatou shared with The Point that her inspiration comes from the powerful stories of resilience she has witnessed among women and children who have faced significant hardships. The pervasive inequality and discrimination against these vulnerable groups fueled her determination to drive positive change and become a voice for the voiceless, striving to build a more just and equitable society.
She also highlighted some of the challenges she encounters as a female leader, including cultural barriers, limited resources, political resistance, and instances of bullying, abuse, and harassment. Isatou noted that safety concerns are a constant reality, as advocating publicly for the rights of women and children sometimes places both her and her family at risk.
“My success stories include, but are not limited to, significantly increasing the presence of women in leadership roles within the Kanifing Municipality. I have also mentored young women, creating a ripple effect that has strengthened a network of advocates for change,” she said.
Additionally, Isatou has spearheaded empowerment programs for young people across regions and The Gambia as a whole, offering education, skill training, and financial support to women and girls.
