Welcome to a conversation that celebrates resilience, courage, and achievements as we mark International Women's Day. In this piece, we explore the stories, progress, and ongoing journey towards gender equality.

International Women's Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

Delving into the diverse voices that shape our world on International Women's Day, I encourage all to join us in this piece of a vox pop exploration, capturing the thoughts and perspectives of individuals on the significance of this day for women everywhere.

Ida Faal of FitaFaal, an Auto-Mechanic, appreciates the day, saying: “International Women's Day is a reminder to celebrate women's achievements and push for gender equality. Let's keep advocating, supporting, and building a more inclusive world for all.”

Fatoumatta Sanneh, a gender activist, gives her view on the day: “For me, I am too happy with International Women’s Day; it should be revolutionary women’s day. I am super grateful for all the women who have come before me, whose shoulders I stand on, who have made it possible for me to enjoy the rights I enjoy today. However, there’s more to be done by the authorities we have entrusted to protect and guard our rights.

“Amid all the inequality women face in this country, on this year International Women’s Day, I want to remind the government and the minister of Women, Gender and Social Welfare that Gambian women are not happy. Safeguarding the rights of women and girls in relation to FGM in The Gambia is vital for their health, human rights, gender equality, and empowerment. It ensures protection from physical and mental harm, upholds fundamental human rights principles, promotes gender equality by challenging harmful stereotypes, and enables girls to access education and make informed choices about their futures. Today I feel so good to see women being celebrated, their efforts being recognised in the world and to also reflect on the changes.”

Louise Alasan, Communication Officer at National Civic Council, advises: “My message today will go to all women out there. Don’t allow men to put you in a vulnerable state and make you believe you are. You are not vulnerable. You are powerful, you can stand and rule and you have the powers. Be courageous cause you have everything it takes; you’re powerful so take your stance and rule the world.”

Adam Jobe, a journalist, calls on all women to reflect, saying: “Well as a woman, especially a mother of two and a career woman, I feel very proud of myself for breaking barrier both at home and at my work place.

“I feel it is a day for all women to reflect and celebrate their personal achievements and those of others they admire. International Women's Day is a day of unity with all women across the world celebrating each other.

“Also, I want to say Women have always played essential roles in the movements for voting right, civil right, children’s right and many others; therefore they should be prioritised and make their voices meaningful. I would therefore like wish all women a Happy Women's Day - to all the phenomenal women who continue to break barriers and defy stereotypes.”
