Awa Gai, a remarkable young woman, is making waves in The Gambia with her outstanding contributions to women's empowerment and human rights advocacy.

At just 19 years old, she founded She Awards Gambia, the country's first and biggest women's awards event, which has since become a consistent and impactful celebration of women's achievements.

The brainchild of Awa, She Awards Gambia, has gained significant recognition for its dedication to honouring and uplifting women in various fields. Awa's vision and determination have transformed this initiative into a platform that inspires a generation of women and girls to be anything they want to become while striving for excellence.

Beyond her work with She Awards Gambia, Awa is a human rights lawyer with a passion for addressing a wide range of human rights issues.

Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Law degree, a Barrister-at-Law certificate, and a Master of Laws in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa from the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria in South Africa. During her master's program, Awa delved into in-depth research on advancing access to justice for women in The Gambia using transitional justice mechanisms. Her exceptional work earned her the esteemed 3rd Place Recipient title in the Dean's Essay Competition at the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria.

In an Interview with The Point,  Awa's stated that her commitment to women's rights and gender justice began at a young age, adding that her journey as a women's rights advocate originated during her time as Head Girl at Charles Jow Memorial Academy from 2015 to 2016. Recognised for her remarkable achievements, she received the Most Outstanding Diploma of Arts Student Award during her graduation ceremony.

“Subsequently, I joined Safe Hands for Girls as a volunteer, where I honed my skills and quickly rose through the ranks from Program Assistant to Program  Officer,” he says. “I also subsequently worked with other women-led organizations in the Gambia and beyond. My dedication and passion for empowering women and creating positive change were evident in my  transformative work within the organization.”

Awa however indicated that her impressive accomplishments and unwavering dedication to women's rights have established her as a respected figure in The Gambia's advocacy landscape. Her innovative initiatives and commitment to recognising and celebrating women's achievements through She Awards Gambia have inspired countless individuals and organizations.

As a human rights lawyer, she says she continues to champion justice and equality, advocating for marginalised communities and empowering women to exercise their rights. In addition she says that her expertise and knowledge in human rights issues, particularly in enhancing access to justice for women, have positioned her as a leading voice in the field.

Awa’s remarkable journey exemplifies the power of passion, determination and a deep commitment to social change. Her impactful work has transformed lives and opened doors for women in The Gambia, inspiring a new generation of young leaders and change-makers.
