Internationally renowned Gambian human rights activist, Madi Jobarteh, has been conferred an Award of Excellence by the Young Africans Network for Global Goal during the Organisation's Africa Youth Summit, held recently at the Management Development Institute (MDI) in Kanifing.

The award was in recognition of his unwavering dedication to the empowerment and inclusion of African youths, further praising his persistent human rights activism.

YANGG, is a network of African youths and pioneers who are keen to ensure change. The vision is to raise global youth leaders who are rooted in sustainability for African transformation.

Receiving the award, Madi Jobarteh underscored that Africa is not short of youth leaders, political leaders or leaders in any sphere.

He recalled since he was a schoolboy and as youth, he joined several youth groups of all sorts, adding that there’s no shortage of youth groups, movements, structures and initiatives in each and every African country.

However, he explained that the reality is that the youth of Africa continue to be challenged by poverty, deprivation, lack of opportunities, misgovernance and conflict among other ills.

The renowned activist noted that today, more African youths want to flee the continent than to stay at home, though Africa is not poor but has rather been a donor to everyone around the world, especially to the US, UK, EU and China.

This evidence, he said, lies in figures about ODA, FDI, illicit financial flows and trade which show that Africa gives more to the outside world than they give to Africa.

Moreover, he urged them to ponder over why foreign president would call all 54 African presidents or prime ministers to summits in their capitals, asking why Africa is the underdog of the world when Africa has been the source of wealth for everyone else.
