Together For Autism Gambia (TFAG) has hosted a one-day symposium, bringing together community members, civil society organizations, and government representatives. This event aimed to deepen the public's understanding of autism and foster greater solidarity for individuals living with the condition.

The symposium took place on Saturday at the American Corner in Fajara.

Together for Autism Gambia (TFAG) is a dedicated Gambian organisation committed to meeting the urgent needs of individuals with autism and their families.

Sirreh Saho, a devoted mother of a child with autism spectrum disorder, shares both the challenges and triumphs of raising her son in a society where awareness of autism is alarmingly low. Her journey sheds light on the difficulties faced by numerous parents in The Gambia, where prevalent misconceptions often result in social stigma and isolation.

"I understand that many people here may not fully grasp the concept of autism, as it is still relatively new in The Gambia. To foster greater awareness, we need to engage in community outreach, enlist the support of cultural and religious leaders, and provide training for schools, hospitals, and law enforcement." she remarked.

She emphasized that the fearless mother is convinced that awareness campaigns and supportive systems can foster a more inclusive society for individuals with autism.

One of Saho's most significant challenges has been securing appropriate medical support for her son, ranging from diagnosis to therapies that could enhance his development.

Despite having limited resources, she has taken it upon herself to learn the ins and outs of his care. While she understands that she cannot substitute for professionals, her self-taught expertise has significantly enhanced his quality of life.

Recognising her previous misunderstandings, she admitted, “I once thought of autism as something that needed to be ‘cured.’ However, I now realize it is a fundamental aspect of his identity. Each autistic child has unique strengths and needs, and they deserve to be in an environment where they can truly flourish.”

Sirreh Saho, who also serves as the president of TFAG, shared how her understanding of autism evolved through her interactions with fellow parents and participation in online support groups, which have provided her with tremendous encouragement.

"While resources are scarce here, connecting with those who truly understand our situation has been an incredible source of support. My son and I wouldn’t have come this far without the invaluable advice and companionship offered by these groups."

She described how her daily life is centered around a structured routine designed to provide her son with a sense of security, from the morning preparations for school to the evening outdoor playtime.

She emphasised that her commitment is clear; every achievement, from potty training to mastering instructions, ignites a sense of renewed hope and joy within her.

"It has highlighted the significance of adopting innovative viewpoints and fostering effective communication. At present, I am committed to raising awareness, creating resources for families, and advocating for an inclusive society," she expressed.

She underscored that her organization is dedicated to building a society that not only acknowledges the distinct needs of autistic individuals but also promotes their inclusion, acceptance, and empowerment in every sector of society.

She believes that TFAG is committed to promoting unity, understanding, and support for individuals with autism in The Gambia. Its mission is to foster acceptance, raise awareness, and establish a collaborative network that improves the quality of life for those impacted by autism.

Isatou Cham, a fellow mother of a child with autism, shared her journey and emphasized the crucial role that autism mothers play as the primary educators for their children.

Sainabou Drammeh, the Secretary General of Together for Autism Gambia (TFAG), expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the participants for attending the symposium to share their invaluable experiences and insights on autism. She encouraged everyone to disseminate the knowledge they gained during the event, stressing its importance for the welfare of society and the nation as a whole.
