He made the remarks on Wednesday during the launch of the National Energy Efficiency Strategy supported by the World Bank Group at Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara Conference Center.
PS Camara said people should be aware of the type of appliances they install in their homes and work places to promote energy efficiency.
“When purchasing equipment or appliances we use at our homes and work places, we should look out for the energy efficient ones. There are star ratings attached to them that the more ratings you have the better it becomes. I know at times it can be more expensive when buying appliances that can enable energy efficiency, but it can economise your monthly power bills,” he stated.
He advised people in both homes and work places to switch off their appliances when not in use to reduce power demand and improve system stability.
“Frequent unnecessary usage of electricity is a major factor contributing to frequent on and offs from the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) due to the unnecessary loads from the power usage,” he further expressed.
The Strategy is expected to create an enabling environment for the uptake of Energy Efficiency (EE) activities including local capacity building to prepare and implement EE investment in The Gambia.
Mr. Camara said EE can help reduce regions’ dependence on imported energy thereby improving energy security.
Leopold Sedogo, representative of the World Bank said they are always delighted to render their support to The Gambia’s energy sector, noting that if it is firm, the electricity sector will stand out.
