NGO Donates Items Worth Over DO.6M to Directorate of Social Welfare

Stand (formally Legs4Africa), a Non-governmental Organisation last Friday extended magnanimity to the Directorate of Social Welfare under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare with the donation of prosthetic, orthotic and other essential items meant for people with limb differences and other structural or functional limitations.
  1. The items, worth over six hundred thousand dalasis, will not only help in easing mobility and independence, but also these people enjoy their human rights in the same way as others in the larger community.

Fatou Kinteh, minster for Gender, Children and Social Welfare, while thanking the benefactors for the magnanimous support, acknowledged that the items would now ease the burden of securing such items.

Minister Kinteh made reference to the Convention on the Right of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which reminds all that facilitating access to mobility aids, assistive devices and technologies is a state obligation.

"More than 170 countries have ratified the Convention, obliging them to ensure access for people in need to high quality affordable prosthetics and orthotics services."

She acknowledged the efforts made by the organisation in complementing government’s agenda to support people living with disabilities.

A representative of Stand (formally Legs4Africa), Alieu Touray, recalled that the partnership between Legs4Africa, now Stand and the Gambia has been growing for the past ten years supporting the PWDs community in the country.

He promised that his organisation would continue to contribute to the national rehabilitation centre whenever the need arises.

Filly Nyassi, acting Director of Social Welfare, thanked Stand organisation for the support.

He also emphasised that the materials donated would be put to good use, for the greater use of people at the centre and the country at large.

Supported items include the following: 25 X Prosthetic hand tools, 2 X router, 1 X Alignment Jig, 5 X Vice Stands, 5 X Workbenches, 2 X Pillar Drills, 1 X Small Oven, 12 X Vices;

2 X Sewing Machines, 45 X Wheel chairs,15 X Wheelchair Spare and Cushions, 1 X "Table top Sanding Machine, 1 X Small Fume Extractor Chamber, 2 X Examination beds, 19 X Zimmers, Rollators, Deltas, 75 X Crutches, 1 X Air Compressor, among a host of others.
