NDMA, UNDP, UNDAC hold joint press conference to mark end of mission

The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) held a joint press conference on Monday to mark the official conclusion of a 3-week mission by UNDAC in collaboration with NDMA.

Angus Lambkin, team leader of UNDAC said the UN agency will continue to work with The Gambia Government, NDMA and partners to address the findings.

According to Mr. Lambkin, they have drafted a report of their findings following the conclusion of their mission.

The UNDAC mission, he added has taken note of the effects of the disaster and its impact on communities in The Gambia. He further assured of their willingness to work with relevant partners to address the issues.

Sana Dahaba, NDMA Executive Director applauded UNDP and UNDAC for their laudable efforts and support rendered to his agency. The NDMA boss detailed that findings contained in the report include issues surrounding waste management, infrastructure, public health, sanitation and education, among others.

Mr Dahaba noted that The Gambian Government has formulated short and long-term plans to ease the effects of disaster in the country, noting that in the short-term, Government has distributed over 6 million dalasis worth of food items to victims across the country. He noted that in partnership with World Food Programme (WFP), the Government is currently engaged in cash distribution amounting to 8 million dalasis.
