The Ministry of Interior recently convened a five-day forum designed to review the private security companies Act 2011. The review forum held at the National Nutrition Agency conference hall, attracted relevant stakeholders and experts to look into some legal gaps presently evident in the Act.

This, forum sought to harmonise or align the Act into the Ministry’s security sector reform agenda as well as other laws related to the provision of private security matters in The Gambia.

It is anticipated that coming up with such a comprehensive regulatory framework would fill the existing gaps in the current act and guide the operations of the companies. More importantly, the reviewed Act would go a long way in helping to regulate the operation of private security service providers in order to make it conform to democratic norms and international best practices.

At the opening, Abrahama K. Mendy, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Interior, disclosed private security companies the world over are involved in provision of range of services, from risks analysis to close protection of individuals and strategically vital installations and locations within the regions.

“The most common of the wide range of services offered by Private Security service providers in The Gambia can be seen around the banks, hotels, GSM Installations, factories, residential buildings, private businesses inter-governmental organisations, Non-governmental organisations, UN bodies just to mention a few. DPS noted.

Besides, he reminded that the Ministry’s position during the gathering is that they must not forget that the national security will never be compromised in this country, adding that therefore while they attempt, to begin the review they must not forget that what they all share is the Gambia and must never come up with any issues that are intended to promote their personal gains at the expense of their common good.
